GPT Store and the Android market model
On January 10, 2024, OpenAI opened GPT Store, a marketplace for custom versions of ChatGPT. It explores the App Store's logic, but I would rather compare it to the Android market.
An open and messy market
There are no device restrictions. It is a fairly chaotic market with openings through different channels.
The return of traffic competition
It goes back to the original logic of competing for traffic.
Why an existing user base matters
A product with no users of its own will probably have a hard time. A product that already has a basic service has a better chance: it can use the platform to extend its users and bind them more deeply.
Developer costs and the startup tax
Costs for ordinary developers have fallen, but the startup tax they will have to pay later is higher.
Stickiness and the longer vision
Users of this system may stick more than expected, but this is only a starting point. The end goal should be to distribute everything through app distribution services.
